CONTEMPORA SF - RAFA CAÑALS
MONDAY, JUNE 16 - FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 2025 - 2 - 4 PM

The experience of a collective creation workshop led by Rafael Cañals consists of integrating methodologies that allow the artist/dancer to delve into an exploration of their idiosyncrasy along with the generation of a shared vocabulary that unifies the group expression. In the development of the material, improvisation as a practice of composing dances, experimentation, and a variety of codified movements that arise from Rafael’s artistic practice coexist, such as falling, undulating, spiraling, being off-center, and erroneous dynamism.

These tools will facilitate, in the context of contemporary dance, a vehicle for corporal expression of identity and choreography as a study of space, time, energy, and live composition. The process aims to be a laboratory space where everyone, with their backgrounds and contexts, contributes to the development of an artistic work, without hierarchies, without technical impositions, and without expectations. The final sample is to put a period in a discourse that continues to unfold to the rhythm of movement, music, text and other interdisciplinary convergences.
MONDAY, JUNE 16, 2025 - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 2025 - 11:15 AM - 1 PM

Moving Body - Moving Image

In this immersive 3-day dance film workshop, participants will explore the intersection of movement and film through the lens of interoception—the awareness of internal bodily sensations. Through improvisation and meditation practices, participants will tap into their unique creative voice, opening up the sensory experience of the body. They will then experiment with cinematic tools and techniques to bring their movement to life on film. Together, we’ll watch and discuss dance films, explore experimental narratives, and engage in creative play.
CONTEMPORA SF - KESLEY PASCHICH
TUESDAY, JUNE 17, 2025 + THURSDAY, JUNE 19 to FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 2025 - 9:30 - 11 AM

Countertechnique® provides tools for body and mind to deal with the demanding dance practice of the 21st century. It is a movement system to help the dancer think about the dancing body, focusing on the process of incorporating information into action. Within a clear structure of exercises, the Countertechnique® class thoroughly prepares the body for rehearsal and performance, enabling dancers to move bigger, more fluidly and more spatially, while becoming stronger and more flexible. By continuously and sequentially directing parts of the body away from each other in space, Countertechnique® allows the moving dancer to work with an ever-changing dynamic balance. This dynamic balance reduces the pressure on the overall body structure and can be changed at any given moment. The Countertechnique® class results in dancers using less energy, losing their fear of taking risks and gaining speed in changing direction.
